Why Medical Interpreting Matters at Appointments

By Carlos Pacheco · Sep 2026

Medical appointments can be difficult to follow in a second language. Ask the healthcare organization about its language assistance services.

A medical interpreter supports spoken communication between patients and providers. Written documents require translation, which is a separate task.

Ask about the interpreter's training and whether they meet the healthcare organization's requirements. Bilingual ability or MA registration alone does not establish interpreter qualifications.

Before leaving, ask the healthcare team to clarify any diagnosis, medication direction or next step you do not understand.
