Understanding Your Blood Pressure Numbers
By Carlos Pacheco · Aug 2026

Blood pressure is one of the most common checks I do, and one of the most misunderstood numbers in healthcare.
The top number (systolic) is the pressure when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure between beats.
Ask your healthcare professional what range and monitoring schedule are appropriate for you. Write down both numbers, the time and any symptoms to discuss with them.
A single reading does not establish a diagnosis, but do not dismiss a very high reading. Follow your clinician's instructions for urgent readings. With chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, vision changes or difficulty speaking, call 911 immediately.
That's why regular checks at home are so useful. They give your doctor real information, not just one snapshot from a busy office.
This article is general information and not medical advice. Always follow your doctor's guidance.
