Translating Medical Documents: What Families Should Know
By Carlos Pacheco · Jul 2026

Medical paperwork is confusing in any language. When it isn't in your first language, it can feel impossible.
Before signing a consent form, ask the healthcare team to explain anything you do not understand and request language assistance if needed.
Keep copies of everything. Discharge instructions and medication lists are important to have in both languages.
Do not rely on an unreviewed automatic translation for medication directions or other important medical instructions.
Ask the healthcare organization about translated documents and the qualifications required. Written translation and appointment interpreting are separate services.
