Home Safety Improvements for Aging Parents: A Room-by-Room Checklist
By Carlos Pacheco · Aug 2026

My medical assistant and construction background inform my interest in home safety. This checklist covers environmental improvements, not a clinical fall-risk assessment.
Bathroom: discuss properly installed grab bars and secure, slip-resistant surfaces. Ask a clinician or occupational therapist whether other equipment is appropriate.
Stairs: add sturdy handrails on both sides and bright lighting at the top and bottom.
Bedroom: keep a clear path from the bed to the bathroom and add a night light.
Kitchen: keep everyday items within easy reach, without climbing or stretching awkwardly.
Entryways: review uneven thresholds and lighting by the door. Work, cost and timing depend on the home and installation requirements.
